It’s December 13 and there are officially 12 more days until Christmas! I can remember hearing The 12 Days of Christmas throughout my lifetime, but once we get past those five golden rings, it’s all a little fuzzy to me. What better goal to have in December than to learn the words of 12 Days of Christmas, right? Here’s a fun “12 Days of Christmas” activity to do with your children or students.
Much like our “Eight Days of Hanukkah” activity, this uses visuals to reinforce the lyrics.
You Will Need:
- 12 days of Christmas images (1 partridge in a pear tree, 2 calling birds, 3 French hens, 4 calling birds, 5 golden rings, 6 geese, 7 swans, 8 milk maids, 9 dancing ladies, 10 leaping lords, 11 pipers, 12 drummers)
- Green strips of paper. Amount will vary based on length and size of overall project.
- Brown paper
- Glue
- Scissors
Procedure
- Print out the images in the song.
- With your child or the student, cut these shapes from the paper. Glue or tape them to strips of green paper that are about the length of the images.
- Using the partridge as a top, arrange the paper so that they create a Christmas tree!
- For counting reinforcement, count each image together and write that number on the side of the “tree.” While listening to the song, follow along on the tree with your child as you sing.
This activity can be done more than one way. It can be completed at one time, or you can do one strip for every day until (or after) Christmas. The pieces can be glued together, or the strips can be tacked up one at a time on a wall.
